Quiz No. 4: 'Knock Knock - Who's There?'

Questions: "Where am I? + How many doors?

A charming scene, I'm sure you'll agree, albeit heavily played around with colourwise, but that's what I like doing, so there!
What I'd like to know, Paris connoisseurs, is two things. Firstly, where was I, exactly, when I took the photo? It's not the sort of place you'd see on a typical tourist jaunt around the famous sites, but all the more pleasing to discover when you do.
My second question is totally different, and one you can answer simply by using your eyes - how many doors can you see?!
And finally, for the bonus points, there's something rather old and extremely historic you can see through the archway, and I'm not talking about the lady or the pigeon!!! So my super question for the real geniuses/i amongst you is: whose wall is it?
Any attempt, comment, question or further info and chat will be warmly read :-) Make sure to read the commenting policy here and have fun!
Oh, and by the way: BIG news. I've decided to send wonderful Paris Set Me Free Photo Quiz bookmarks to all my winners - how about that! I know, I know, it's too much, but that's just me...

Quiz No. 3: 'Secret of the Standing Stone' ~ Answer & Winner!

Paris Paul is the proud winner of Quiz No.3 with a suberbly comprehensive answer, and I quote:
The "standing stone" is known as the "la mire sud" or "southern sight" ('sight', in this case is used like the sight of a gun). It's in the Parc Montsouris, though was moved there only in 1806; before that, it was located in the Paris Observatory Gardens.

It's original function was to help instruments in the observatory align with the Paris Meridian. Bonus points? The name that was scratched out is that of Napoleon. I'm not sure, but I imagine that when he moved the stone he had his name inscribed on it, and after 1814 someone decided it would be best to remove the name.

Nothing more to add really! Well done Paul - now send me your name and address and I'll send you a wonderful Paris Set Me Free - Paris Photo Quiz bookmark shortly, just as soon as I've made some (bet you can't wait, right?)!

Quiz No. 3: 'Secret of the Standing Stone'

Question: "Where is it and what's the hole for?"

A mighty strange lump of limestone or something stands ominously in the shadows on the edge of a popular Parisian park. But why is it there and what does it represent? And most intriguing of all, what's the freakin' hole for?!
The truth will be revealed shortly, I assure you, but first of all a few comments, if you will! Another bit of intrigue is that it bears the inscription 'DU REIGN DE' (from the reign of) followed by... a neatly chiselled out space! Very curious.
A full answer will include both exactly where it is and what its purpose is, or to be more accurate, was. More detailed answers about the inscription and a bit of history will earn you bonus points! Any attempt, comment, question or further info and chat will be warmly read :-) Make sure to read the commenting policy here and have fun!
